Burkheim Schloßgarten

The gardens of the Burkheim Castle consist mainly of loess terraces. This soil was formed during the Ice Age, when glaciers covered the Alps, the Black Forest and the Vosges mountains. The fine dust was blown out of the gravel of the Rhine Valley and deposited in the lee of the hills, where the loess layer reaches a height of up to 30 metres in places. Loess is one of the most fertile soils, and the wines grown on it display expressive fruit, great elegance and stimulating acidity.
